DONCASTER ST LEGER 1872

The 97th winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 11th September 1872 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Wenlock, a bay colt by Lord Clifden out of Mineral, owned by the 2nd Earl of Wilton. A field of 17 runners contested the race, although there were 191 subscriptions of 25 sovereigns each, which was worth 4775 sovereigns. The value to the winner was £4,450. (Equivalent to £480,600 in 2017)

The early pace was set by Wellingtonia and Merevale, although within a furlong Gladiolus had taken up the running and set a brisk pace until they went down the hill. Approaching the Red House Prince Charlie made his move on the inside and Wenlock on the outside, the two going stride for stride until 2 furlongs from home when Wenlock got the upper hand, striding on to win with ease by 5 lengths in 3 minutes 21.5 seconds.
